Your Week-at-a-Glance Planner for Chicago Yelp Eats! 2010

We love it when Yelp pools their resources to score major deals for their users. June 21-27, Yelp Eats! is back with $25 three-course menus at some of Chicago’s hottest restaurants. Now, we all know PLRGs love a good meal (note to Yelp- a Gym Week is much needed as a follow up to Eats Week), so we put our heads together and created our ultimate Yelp Eats! calendar. We’ve taken all the guesswork out of where to go which night, so all you have to do is make the reservation!

MONDAY, JUNE 21
Green Zebra
After a weekend of hard partying, you may need to detox a bit come Monday. At Green Zebra, you can forego the typical greasy hangover food for something lighter like chilled pea soup with preserved lemon to start and an asparagus tart with caramelized shallots for an entree. For dessert? We’d go with the strawberry shortcake with Greek yogurt.

TUESDAY, JUNE 22
May Street Market
In our opinion, May Street Market by far has the most daring and diverse menu in the Yelp Eats! line-up. This is a great night to dine out with someone you want to impress with your culinary and budgetary prowess (hint- Tuesday is also BYOB night, so double save!) You’ll start things off with odd, but tasty combos of pork belly caramel corn or blue corn calamari. For dinner, grilled tilapia with artichoke puree and olive spread is the quintessential summer dish. And, while we’d like to venture into new territory, the cupcake flight is a must for dessert!

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23
1492 Tapas

How about something with a little spice to get you through the rest of the week? 1492 Tapas, nominated by Metromix as one of the most romantic restaurants in Chicago (nudge and a wink to all the BFs out there), delivers traditional Spanish fare including every PLRGs favorite- tapas! Your appetizer choices include lobster stuffed mussels, goat cheese croquettes and the 1492 House Platter. The paella is not be missed as the main course, but allow a little extra time for this special dish.

THURSDAY, JUNE 24
La Madia
Grab your girlfriends, then grab a slice at La Madia. With this menu, you’ll get your choice of app- asparagus and ricotta bruschetta or prosciutto with mozzarella and teardrop tomatoes- plus one of two truffle laced pizzas or a frisee salad. We recommend saving room for dessert (leftover pizza will be great for lunch on Friday) where you can indulge in their homemade gelato “of the moment” or blood orange ice with Prosecco.

FRIDAY, JUNE 25
Bin 36
A Friday night out with work pals is a great way to end the week, especially when there is wine involved. At Bin 36 there’s something for every taste, light or decadent, so all your coworkers will leave satisfied. To start, you can be good and get the Bin 36 Market Salad or cheat on your diet and go with the rich and creamy mac & cheese. For the entree we’re salivating over the brown sugar cured, slow roasted pork loin chop and house-made ricotta gnocchi.

SATURDAY, JUNE 26
State & Lake

It’s Saturday night and you want to eat somewhere you can see and be seen. Your BF wants to go somewhere that’s not to “frou frou” with real manly food. Well, State and Lake, located on the ground floor of The Wit hotel, fits the bill for both of you. Your three courses begin with a choice of Valencia salad or Pub Soup. For dinner, he can order the slow roasted pork with tomato jam and polenta (pork always makes guys feel macho) and you can savor the roasted salmon with escarole. Being that the restaurant is in the heart of downtown, once dinner’s over you’ll be ready to party.

SUNDAY, JUNE 27
Spring
By Sunday you may want to unwind and dine someplace with a more tranquil atmosphere and Spring in Bucktown is just what you’ll need. They offer up a menu of New American cuisine with Asian Influences in a wonderfully spa-like setting. As a first course, they’re serving Yellowfin Tuna tartare or a farm egg ravioli, but our fave is the coconut lemongrass soup (it’s heavenly). Choice of entrees include Rosa Bianca eggplant masala with coriander yogurt emulsion, Australian Barramundi with cilantro pesto or Maine diver sea scallops with roasted mushrooms and sweet soy. The portions are usually reasonable here, which is great because you’ll still have room for dessert- a Valrhona white chocolate dome with wild strawberries and rhubarb or the lemongrass and kaffir lime panna cotta with brioche donuts.

Help a PLRG Out: Where to have a bachelorette dinner in Chicago?

Help a PLRG Out: Where to have a bachelorette dinner in Chicago?

Hi- I love your website and I thought you might be a helpful resource for my newest problem. I’m trying to plan a fun bachelorette party, and my biggest problem is finding a venue for our meal. Dinner is already a problem because many places won’t do separate checks for a group, and we need a place with the right “bachelorette party vibe.” Any suggestions? I’d appreciate any suggestions! Thanks so much.
- Lindsey

Hey Lindsey! So, the bachelorette party vibe is an easy one for us, but you had us stumped with the “separate checks for a group” thing. So, we did some digging around and found a couple of places that meet both your criteria for having fun, but also keeping arguments over the check to a minimum.

But first, we wanted to add in a few tips for making sure this all goes smoothly and does not devolve into a cat-fight with the guests or the restaurant. We would reccommend asking the guests in advance to bring cash if possible. According to this Tribune article, restaurants are a bit more forgiving if they don’t have to run 10 different credit cards and pay for 10 credit card fees, as opposed to one or two. Also, make sure to let the server or management know up front that you would like separate bills and make it clear what goes on whose tab when you are ordering. You may think you’re pulling a sneak attack move by waiting until the end of the meal, but trust us, this is not cool, as it slows down the server, which is not courteous to him or the other patrons. As PLRGs, we are always splitting checks, so if all of us make sure to practice proper bill-spliting etiquette, there will no longer be menus in Chicago that read “no itemizing checks.”

Now, on to the party. Here are our top picks:

What would a drag show be without disco balls?

If you’re going for the quintessential bachelorette party theme (drag queens, items shaped like penises and fruity martinis) then Kit Kat Lounge, with it’s modern/girly vibe, is the place to be. They have the b-party down to a science here, with dinner packages, already put together for you and your party. Packages range from $35-$55 person, and include everything from apps to entrees to desserts and martinis all with names like the Mae West (southern fried chicken) and the Ginger Rogers (alaskan halibut). So, you can collect money in advance and make paying the check at the end of the meal a breeze. You’ll be entertained by drag performers during your dinner (who will give even you lovely ladies a run for your money, we swear!) or you can book reservation for the special Sinzation male revue dinner show. It’s like a one stop shop for bachelorette party planning!

The Crescent Room at Tizi Melloul.

If you’re looking for something a little different that will really wow the guests, Tizi Melloul, downtown will score you major points. You’d do fine there with just a regular old reservation, but it’s worth it to call ahead and try to book the Crescent Room (seats 15-25ppl)- it’s super fancy, with low seating, inspired by traditional Moroccan decor. Whether you book the dining room or the crescent room, you can order from various “family style” menus ranging from $35-$50 per person, which include items like hummus, mussels, salmon skewers and even chocolate fondue with marshmallows for dessert! Bar packages can be added, starting at just $15/hour for beer and wine, as well as entertainment options such as belly dancers and tarot card readers for an additional charge. Once again, this package pricing makes it really simple to divide up what is owed, since everyone owes the same amount!

The dining room at Mercadito.

The next two spots would really depend on your guests taste in food. Coast Sushi in Bucktown is able to accommodate big groups, will split checks and it’s BYOB, so you can coordinate wine/alcohol purchasing before hand, eliminating the awkwardness when the bill comes. Their menu prices range from $5-$20, so there is something for every budget. Mercadito in River North is also a great spot for large groups, and actually requires that you order off of a prix fixe menu for groups of seven or more. The menu options range in price from $30-$45 per person and includes top notch Mexican cuisine like mango guacamole and rosemary marinated steak tacos.

Do any of you PLRGs out there have any other suggestions for Lindsey?

Save Money, Dine Out & Do Good at Cafe Too

PoorLittleRichGirls love a BYOB restaurant with an affordable prix fixe menu, but we have never come across a place like this before. Cafe Too in Uptown dishes up delicious $18 three course meals and $25 five course meals, plus there’s no corkage fee! And, that’s not even the best part. Before you ask your cube-mate to pinch you, consider the real mission behind this eatery (hint- it’s not just to keep your tummy full!).

Cafe Too is a social enterprise of Inspiration Corporation. Through its supportive services, employment, and housing programs, Inspiration Corporation assists more than 3,000 individuals and families affected by homelessness and poverty each year - serving as a catalyst for self-reliance. Part of their Employment Project, Cafe Too, is a food service job-training program designed to provide students with the tools they need to secure and retain entry-level jobs in the food service industry. The internship gives students real-life work experience and, when successfully completed, a reference for future employers.

The menu changes weekly, so expect fresh and seasonal dishes like Fall Salad with roasted butternut squash and Apple Cider Brined Chicken. Go ahead- spring for the five courses because when you’re eating to support a good cause there’s always room for dessert!

The PLRG Foodist Takes On: Los Nopales

The PLRG Foodist Takes On: Los Nopales

Ladies- listen up! This month I am sharing a fabulous dining secret and one of my favorite spots in the city… Los Nopales.

After spending several years in Texas, I am always on the search for good Mexican food in Chicago. Several years ago, a friend invited me to have a quick dinner at a small Mexican restaurant in her neighborhood, Lincoln Square. From the outside, you probably wouldn’t give Los Nopales much of a second glance. “It’s right next to the Check into Cash store,” she told me. Hmmm…

Doubts aside, once you enter you are taken in by the warm feel and authentic décor, and the fact that this spot is family-owned and run is apparent from the moment you walk in the door. I have never waited more than a few moments for a table, and the staff is always in a hurry to get you seated as quickly as they can. The front room is a better spot than the back, as the rear section of the restaurant can get pretty loud (it is absolutely family friendly and you’ll find large tables of families in the roomier back section). But you will find patrons of all ages beyond families- young couples on dates, large groups of older men digging into the excellent fare and tables of girlfriends catching up over bottles of wine.

A green and red salsa are brought to your table immediately. Skip the red, dive into the green is my advice. But to truly begin your meal, you must have the guacamole. Since the fateful day my friend introduced me to Los Nopales I have been more times than I can count and I never skip this. It is the best guacamole I have ever had in my life. I believe the secret is the extra onion which truly sets it apart. See for yourself, but I can’t believe you’ll disagree. I recently took a guac-lover to Los Nopales who doubted they had the best guacamole in the land. Needless to say, I made a believer out of him.

Now on to main courses where you truly can’t go wrong. From fish tacos to steak tacos to the delicious Enchiladas Suizas, everything on the menu is straightforward and delicious. Among the highlights on the menu are the Grilled Pork Tenderloin Medallions. Served with green beans, rice and light and fluffy tortillas, this is not to be missed. The preparation of the meat at Los Nopales is their greatest talent, and the pork medallions are an excellent example.

The true shining star on the menu, though, is the Carne ala Tampiquena. If you ask how the chef recommends it, they will tell you well done as this is customary in Mexico. In my humble opinion, I recommend medium. The tenderness of this skirt steak rewrites the book on skirt steak. The steak is heavily marinated, and I swear to you, it melts in your mouth. It is served as a long strip of meat, and while my intention every time is to take half home, it is nearly impossible. The dish comes with rice, beans and one enchilada suiza which is the perfect sidenote to this amazing dish. I could go on for paragraphs about the Tampiquena…

To top it all off, Los Nopales is BYO for a small corkage fee. My tip is a bottle of Castano, a Spanish Red you can find at Binny’s for $6.99. That is not a typo, it’s under $7 and it’s great! Don’t buy it elsewhere though, as I’ve seen it marked up much higher at other stores.

I hope you listen to the PLRG Foodist on this one. Make the trip to Western Avenue and seek out Los Nopales (open every night but Monday). It is truly a delight. Just don’t head there all at the same time, as I don’t want to have to start waiting for a table. Adios!

The PLRG Foodist Takes On: May Street Market

The PLRG Foodist Takes On: May Street Market

What lucky girls we are to live in a city with so may spots offering my favorite secrets to good eats- BYO, Prix Fixe and Small Plates menus. I adore few things more than food, especially a great restaurant experience, but saving myself from a $30 entree or an expensive wine list is priceless (well, maybe just worth the price of the bottle).

While most of my columns will be focused on BYO’s (in my opinion, the best way to save money while dining out), I am starting things off with a faux byo. Let me clarify- last week I found the best deal in town. For quite some time, foodies everywhere have been raving about May Street Market’s ingredient-driven dishes focusing on what is fresh and in season. However, be it the economy or perhaps just the goodness of the Chef ’s heart, he has created a $25 prix fixe on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights and has WAIVED his $20 corkage fee. VOILA- an amazing 3 course meal at a fabulous restaurant that now moonlights as a BYO for half the week.

The prix fixe menu (lesson of the day: pronounced “pre-fee” according to the waiter) was short and sweet. Don’t expect to choose from their typical bistro or market menu. There were two appetizer options, three entrees and two desserts, allowing two people to try just about everything. The menu changes frequently, but on my trip the Fried Green Tomatoes tasted fresh off the vine, the Scallops were tasty (skimpy serving though), the Gnocchi was divine, but the showstopper was…dramatic pause…THE S’MORES. The chocolate mousse is something that I will talk about for quite some time. These are not the s’mores from your girl scout days! We are talking rich, creamy, AMAZING chocolate mousse.

I would recommend res’s just in case, but it definitely was not necessary the night I was there. And there is a great organic grocer down Grand where we picked up our wine (a deep red paired well with my chocolate at the end) I left very happy, full and thrilled to walk out of May Street Market for just $50.

Review: Fab!

Hot This Month: July, 2010

Give back while throwing down with the Stimulus Social Club's July 7 event at Stanley's Kitchen & Tap in the West Loop. A $10 donation gets you your first drink and apps, plus all the proceeds will go to House of the Good Shepherd.
July 13 is National French Fry day, but soggy fries in a red paper carton aren't on the menu for you, PLRG! Stop by deca BAR at The Ritz-Carlton, spring for a cocktail and you'll score complimentary hand-cut french fries. Choose from truffle/duck fat fries with smoked sea salt or regular fries with lemon salt, fresh oregano and grated parmesan reggiano.
If you're celebrating Bastille Day, July 14, what better way to pay homage to our French friends than with gourmet food and wine? In Fine Spirits is serving up a four-course garden dinner and wine pairing, prepared by Chef Marianne Sundquist, for just $50. Make sure to call and RSVP by July 10.
