Hey Sal: What to Get the Girl Who Has Everything

“Hey Sal – What do you get for the girl who has everything? I know people say that – but my friend really has everything she could possibly want or need. Help me think of some unique gift ideas, please!”
- Emily, Chicago, IL

Emily,

Finding gifts for friends is tough – especially when your friend doesn’t really need anything. So in this case, you have to steer towards items that they would never buy for themselves – frivolous things that are just fun, rather than functional. Here are some good ideas I’ve used in the past.

Yellow Box Beauty.

I came across this service a couple years back, and it’s a welcome luxury to whoever receives it. At the start of each month, Yellow Box sends a beautifully wrapped yellow box to your friend, chalked full of the latest and greatest beauty products. Talk about a gift that keeps on giving! Check it out at: http://yellowboxbeauty.com/

Chicago Walking Tour

A great gift is something that you can share with your friend. Walking tours are a fantastic way to get out of the house and learn something new about our city. You can buy your friend’s lunch and beef up on local tid-bits, sure to impress friends and family for years to come. Your best bet? Fourth-generation Chicago historian Sally Sexton Kalmbach – she has a variety of tours from which to choose. Email her for details: sskalmbach@yahoo.com

A Pet Rock

I’m kidding…

Personalize It

If I know you PLRG reader, you’ve got a few Kodak/Facebook photo albums from the previous year – so why not pull those images off the net, and put them in your friend’s hands? A personalized photo album is always a sincere gift. Find a journal or album that you like, and place not only photos, but quotes, stories, and inside jokes inside. Depending on how artsy you are, you can really have fun with this. Try Anthropologie or T.J. Maxx/Marshalls for unique albums/journals.

Hey Sal: Hostess Gift?

Hey Sal: Hostess Gift?

“Hey Sal, I can’t afford to fly home for Thanksgiving so a friend is having me to her parent’s house for the holiday weekend. I’ve never met her family and am not sure what an appropriate hostess gift would be. It’s getting down to the wire - help!”
- Karla, Chicago, IL

Karla,

Don’t you worry - your goose (or turkey) isn’t cooked yet! There are some guaranteed gifts that will have that family wanting you to come back anytime.

In this case I would recommend combining your hostess and thank-you gifts into one. You can always (and should always) follow-up with a hand written thank-you note, but walking in the door with a gift immediately shows your appreciation for having been invited and included.

Since it’s a holiday and the house is sure to be full, try to think of a gift that will make the host/ess’ job easier. For example, offer to bring a breakfast basket. It’s a nice gesture, and also keeps the host/ess from having to cook one morning (something that will be very appreciated). Another idea along those same lines is a present that hinges on the holiday which you will be celebrating. Perhaps a Thanksgiving themed Christmas ornament for their family tree. The more thoughtful the gift, the better - so use your friend as an asset. Ask her what her parents like, how formal their house is, etc.

And remember, the best gift you can give is to be a helpful and gracious house guest. Regardless of how your friend behaves in their parents home, you should always keep your space clean, offer to help whenever possible, and be polite!
