D&D Spotlight: Ritzy Couture Vintage Jewelry

All Fasionistas know that accessories are sometimes what makes an outfit, and while we at PLRG love a pair of classic diamonds studs as much as the next girl, what we love even more are unique, vintage pieces that are one of kind! Enter Ritzy Couture Vintage Jewelry, located in the heart of downtown on the Mag Mile.

Ritzy Couture has only been in business since 2006 but they boast the best selection of costume jewelry and fresh water pearl designs. They carry a great assortment of items from modern pearl designs to estate pieces to quirky items such as their Owl Jewelry line, so there is definitely something for everyone.

If your interest is peaked and you would love an evening of shopping, wine and networking, Ritzy Couture has you covered. On Saturday, February 27th from 5-9pm they will be hosting a jewelry trunk show at Galleria 1712 on West North Ave. Enjoy a night with the girls and grab your own one-of-a-kind, custom designed jewelry piece or pieces while sipping on glass of Merlot.

Also if you can’t make it to the trunk show, never fear because this week’s spotlight falls on Ritzy Vintage Couture!

D&D Spotlight: Wolfbait & B-Girls Boutique

D&D Spotlight: Wolfbait & B-Girls Boutique

We like to think of co-owners Jenny & Shirley as the Ethan Hunts of local fashion. As if someone from a highly secretive branch of the CIA contacted them in 2006 and in a deep voice told them, “This is your mission if you choose to accept it: bring local Chicago designers to the masses”. As if they took their mission seriously and in response, opened Wolfbait & B-girls in Logan Square in April of that year. Well regardless if our love for secret agents or Tom Cruise (pre-Suri, obvi) have anything to do with this dream, the ladies behind Wolfbait can surely say “Mission Accomplished”.

Located at the roundabout at the intersection of Logan Boulevard, Milwaukee Avenue and Kedzie Boulevard, Wolfbait & B-girls feels like a home away from home, filled with unique designs from more than 50 local designers. They have everything from clothing to jewelry to handbags to greeting cards. After confirming Wolfbait as a participant in our upcoming fashion show, Battle of the Boutiques, we stopped by the boutique to check it out for ourselves. Inside we were greeted by Jenny, who was sitting at her sewing machine, working on a garment that will soon be for sale on the racks. Cool to say the least. Both owners have their own clothing lines (Bruiser & Brazen Judy) that they sell in the store. The merchandise is constantly changing, as most pieces are one-of-a-kind. The prices are right up our alley as well- ranging from $30-$250, with most under $100.

This week’s spotlight falls on Wolfbait, and their new D&D just for PoorLittleRichGirls.  Make it your mission and support Chicago’s amazing local designers.  (And come watch Wolfbait compete in Battle of the Boutiques on February 26th at Lumen!)

Feeling Ill About a Lost Earring? Call the Earring Doctor!

Lucky me! My husband gave me a beautiful pair of earrings for Christmas. I was so excited about them I wouldn’t take them off for days. As we boarded the plane to visit my family, the stewardess smiled at me and said, “Miss, it looks like you lost an earring!”

Has this happened to you before? I went home and found five additional lone earrings of which the partner had been somehow lost. I immediately scoured the internet for reinforcements and discovered EarringDoctor.com. Genius! You can order any type of extra earring backings to keep on hand and avoid any more casualties!

I only spent $5 on the clear stops I bought. It’s a PLRG must!

EXTRA PLRG TIP: If it’s too late for your favorite pair of earrings, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the lone ranger you have left. One way to use your solo earring is as a super-fancy push pin! You may need to use an actual pushpin (depending on whether you’re using a cork-board, fabric-board, etc.) to get things started, but in the end the look is tres chic!

Consignment Realignment

Consignment Realignment

Just a few years ago, the mention of a consignment shop would immediately bring to our minds memories of musty-smelling, old-woman perusing, uber-unstylish clothing stores. The word consignment alone summoned notions of hand-me-downs, castoffs and used goods. Well friends, how mistaken we were!

Chicago’s consignment store arsenal boasts shops that - if you take the time to look - have barely-worn, fabulous high-end clothing and unique accessories. We love the ability to spend a portion of what you would at a regular retail store and walk out with bags of clothing…and a piece of mind that no other girl at the party you’re going to that evening will be wearing the same thing. We’ve found everything from Jimmy Choo heels to Calvin Klein suits to chunky cocktail rings.

Now don’t get us wrong, it takes commitment and energy to tackle the dozens of large and oft-unorganized racks of clothing, or trying on your finds in shower-sized fitting rooms. And there will be days when the selection is totally picked over and the only thing you can seem to find in your size are matching hot pink sweat suits. But…find a vintage Chanel purse for under $100 and all of a sudden your day-long search was the best time you’ve spent all week!

What’s more? It’s Green! According to the Council for Textile Recycling, consignment or secondhand clothing stores helped to prevent almost half of the 2.5 billion pounds of postconsumer textile waste from entering the solid waste stream.

This week PLRG chatted with Aimee Pallozzi, Store Manager at Buffalo Exchange (BE) in Lincoln Park. In her store, buyers are trained to hand-pick items that are in style and in good condition. Clothing at Buffalo Exchange are only on the racks for 1 month before they are marked down and then donated to local charities if not sold. Pallozzi said that she and her team do the pre-work so that shopping at BE is not overwhelming, but she does admit that it’s not the same at all consignment shops. We asked her to share some tricks of her trade with PLRG.

Here are 4 tips that she says are words to live by when shopping resale:

Hold wool fabrics up to your ear before purchasing - if it has a crunching sound when it moves that means it’s been shrunk, and might not best purchase.

Look at the labels- typically, if the label is well constructed it means that the entire garment is made well.

Check zippers, buttons and seams before buying.

One person’s trash is another one’s treasure - so while shopping, think of anything you have in your closet that you might be able to sell!

Reduce…Reuse…Re-wear!

Intrigued? Check one out for yourself and let us know what you find. Here are 10 resale shops around the Chi:

Buffalo Exchange (Lakeview & Wicker Park)

Crossroads Trading Company (Lincoln Park, Wicker Park & Evanston)

Cynthia’s Consignments

Lenny & Me

Recycle It

The Daisy Shop

McShane’s Exchange

Leahey & Laudue Consignment

ShearWear Consignment

Elliott Consignment
