On Our Radar: Volume 2

We get so many emails and phone calls each day with information on new products, boutique sales, restaurant openings and everything in between, that we thought it would be a good idea to let you in on what the PLRG team is into lately. The Radar is your at-a-glance guide to what is oh-so-hot and so-right-now in the world of a PoorLittleRichGirl:

The lovely ladies of Borrow a Dress Couture are gearing up for their First Annual Fashion Statement Soiree. Friday, May 28, they’ll thank you and all of their customers for their support by hosting a cocktail reception and fashion show at Bon V, complete with goodie bags and a chance to win a month’s worth of dress rentals!

We love getting gift cards and love all the discounts our various reward cards afford us, but our wallets and our sanity are suffering (we have ruined many a high priced wallet by overstuffing it with god knows what). So, we had one of those “why didn’t we think of that” moments we we came across the Card Cache. Just punch holes in all your gift or reward cards, not on the magnetic part, and string them through the slim wire ring. You’ll love all the new real estate in your wallet.

After 17 years serving up French fare in Chicago’s West Loop, Marche will be closing its doors on June 13. Owner Howard Davis and Jerry Kleiner (under their KDK partnership they also own Red Light, Giocco and Opera) cite the end of their lease as one of the many factors that led to the closing.

We’re totally digging Kate Miller Heidke right now. The former opera singer’s sound is reminiscent of all the other female artists you love so much (Lily Allen, Regina Specter, even Cindy Lauper), but still is too unique to pin down. We especially love “Can’t Shake It”, “Caught in the Crowd” and the instant classic “Are You F*cking Kidding Me” - we don’t want to spoil it for you, so just go listen to it now.

Speaking of music, a new website, SongVote.com, launched earlier this month. The site functions as an open election to help you find the perfect music for your upcoming cocktail party, wedding or any event that might call for some crowd-sourced music. We’ve even created a playlist of our own! Use VIP Code: PLRG Summer Playlist and Pin: 374 to add music to our playlist and vote for your favorite songs.

On Our Radar

We get so many emails and phone calls each day with information on new products, boutique sales, restaurant openings and everything in between, that we thought it would be a good idea to let you in on what the PLRG team is into lately. The Radar is your at-a-glance guide to what is oh-so-hot and so-right-now in the world of a PoorLittleRichGirl:

Check out District Bar’s Zip Car Member Party, this Wednesday, April 14. Members will receive a complimentary cocktail and half-price appetizers and Zip Car will be giving away reduced memberships and free driving credits! Although, we recommend leaving the zip car at home and taking public trans to this +21 event.

Spa Forever in Bucktown is offering some sweet deals on their spa services. Their Swedish Massages, Relaxation Massages and ALL Facials are just $59 on weekdays in April (regularly priced up to $115). You can also get 20% off all waxing services on weekdays!

Your favorite rooftop bar, Market, just finished a remodel and it’s just in time for spring/summer weather. Their rooftop now boasts two additional flat screen tvs (like there weren’t enough already!), seven white-linen draped cabanas and a new walk up bar. The enormous beer garden has also been tweaked with the addition of a retractable roof, so now you can party outdoors all year long. But, that doesn’t mean you have to celebrate summer by drinking your calories- the Lo-Cal Coco is a new feature cocktail which includes Ciroc Coconut Vodka and coconut water, for just 140 calories each!

You loved Battle of the Boutiques, so we know you’d love another fashion face-off. April 22, Style Wars 2010- An Avant Garde Affair, will challenge local STYLISTS to put together their most fashionable and unique ensembles, then duke it out on the runway. The event also coincides with Earth Day, helping to shine a light on sustainable issues through art and fashion. Tickets start at just $35, depending on the package.

Speaking of fashion, keep an eye out for the grand opening of Sofia Vintage’s new location at 72 East Oak Street (formerly on Clark). The Zisook sisters will once again combine their ecclectic fashion forces to bring you the creme of the crop when it comes to consigned and vintage pieces. The doors to the new location will be opening in later this month.

What’s Hot from Showbiz Shelly

What’s Hot from Showbiz Shelly

Welcome to my column! Seeing as this month is the “Hot Issue,” I asked singer and actor Harry Connick, Jr. about as many “hot” questions as I could think of. I recently sat down with him to talk about his film, “New in Town,” also starring Renee Zellweger. You can catch it in theaters now.

Why did “New In Town” seem like a hot script?
It’s sweet. And Renee is just great in everything she does. That’s really the reason I wanted to do it — was to work with her and I knew she was attached to it when I read the script. I thought this looks like a fun movie to do because a lot of times she does things of a heavier nature, and I’ve done some things like that in the past, so this was nice to just lighten up and do something fun.

Behind the scenes moments that were not hot:
The whole movie was goofy and crazy….it takes place in Minnesota but we shot it in Winnipeg and it was just so unbelievably cold. I had to have a beard in the movie and a lot of times we’d be shooting outside. Just from the condensation from your breath, you’d have these like little icicles all over your face and she’d [Renee] be the first to kind of point that stuff out. It would be a little bit embarrassing. Nostricles, beardscicles were huge on the set because it got down to 50 below. It was crazy.

Which is hotter: music or movies?
I’m just glad I can do both. If I’ve been on the road for six months, it’s nice to remain creative off the road. If I had to pick, I’d pick music but fortunately I haven’t had to so far.

On his kids getting all hot and bothered with anticipation waiting to see the film:
Yea, they’re excited to see this one. This is definitely one they can see and they’re looking forward to it. In fact, to my youngest, my six year old, I probably had to explain the story about six times the other night because every time I got to the end she said tell me again, I want to know about it again. She’s really excited about it. My oldest is 12 so it was interesting to see my daughter in the movie have her first date come to the house to pick her up because these are things that are right around the corner for me. It was kind of interesting to test the waters a little bit. My oldest will be 13 in a couple months and so far she’s not really dating, but I’m sure when she does there may be some talks down the road that I’m going to have to have with some of these young guys. She’s got a “boyfriend” now and he’s a great kid and it’s been real cool. Of course, what boyfriend means now is a lot different than what a boyfriend means at 18, so there’s not a whole lot to worry about right now. I don’t know how I’m going to deal with it. I hope she chooses wisely.

On celebrating Valentine’s Day with his hot wife, model Jill Goodacre:
We’ve never been big Valentine’s Day people. We’ve always kind of blown it off because it forces you to throw attention on something you kind of should be doing anyway. We’ve never been big candy or flowers kind of folks. I’m just glad we both aren’t into it. That would suck if she was really into it. If she were, I would go along with it, but I’m just glad she’s not. Could you imagine if I was really into it? That would be worse (he says laughing).

On hot ladies throwing their panties on stage:
That usually happens in the dressing room.

On seeing himself as a hot sex symbol:
No. Just talk to my wife about that. She’ll tell you. We laugh about it. It’s a nice thing that people say that when they occasionally do, but we don’t spend much time thinking about it.

On why a beard is not hot:
I’m not a beard guy. My dad has a great beard when he’s worn it a couple of times in his life, and he looks great with it. But I just don’t have a very good one so I’m happy to shave it off. If I don’t have to shave, I don’t shave, but letting it grow for a month is just never becoming.

Hot Topics This Month!

Oscar winning actress Jennifer Hudson made her first public appearance Feb. 1 at the Superbowl since the October slayings of her mother, brother and nephew. The American Idol alum belted out the National Anthem. However, she was lip synching because according to the executive producer, “There are too many variables to go live…the slightest glitch would devastate the performance.” According to Entertainment Weekly, Hudson will be going on a six-week tour later this spring.

Everyone has been chattering this month about Jessica Simpson’s weight gain. She looked a little bit heavier while performing at a concert in Florida. Now everyone’s speaking out on it from the ladies of “The View” to her ex, Nick Lachey.

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps got caught with a bong. A picture from a University of South Carolina party hit the internet of Phelps smoking from a marijuana pipe. Not only may the athlete face criminal charges, but USA Swimming has banned him from competing for the next three months. His sponsor, Kellogg’s, also announced they will not be renewing the Olympian’s contract.

On Christian Bale. Tapes were leaked online of a tirade the actor had while filming his movie Terminator: Salvation. Bale let loose on the director of photography after he stepped into a shot. Go to my page on www.B96.com and click on my February 3rd podcasts to hear the audio.

Chicagoan Vince Vaughn was anything but hot last week on a chilly Chicago day. He was seen filming scenes at O’Hare airport for his upcoming movie “Couples Retreat.” Last time I spoke to Vince he said he loves coming back to Chicago because “the people are nice, there’s great architecture and the food doesn’t hurt either.” He also said there isn’t one thing that makes Chicago great, “It’s all things.” Check out my video interview with him on my page at www.B96.com.

It’s the “Hot Issue” but try splurging on a cool treat. Check out the new, one-of-a-kind ice cream shop, iCream, opening on Milwaukee Avenue Saturday, February 21st. It’s America’s first custom-made ice cream café. You pick all the ingredients, including the type of milk base, flavor, etc. and it’s made on the spot. More than 100,000 different combinations are possible. The secret ingredient: liquid nitrogen. Also enjoy coffee, espresso, Italian sodas and more.

Editor’s Letter: It’s Gonna be a Hot One!

It may be freezing outside, but for PoorLittleRichGirls living in Chicago, this might be the hottest month of the year! We know it feels like three degrees outside, but with Valentine’s Day, Restaurant Week, Battle of the Boutiques and tons of other deals and events all on the horizon you’ll be dating, dining and dressing in smokin’ hot style.

Let’s start with dating. Everyone knows that no matter how hot you look, it takes a girl with confidence to land the man of her dreams. Check out some Bikram Yoga to get your mind and body ready for the prowl or tone up your confidence (and your ass) with some hot and sexy classes at Flirty  Girl Fitness (small guilt trip-I did swing myself around a stripper pole to bring you this story, so if you do not read it all of my bumping and grinding will have been in vain.)

Once you’re prepped for your date with Mr. Destiny, you’ll probably need some token, a gift say, to help express your feelings. Check out our Valentine’s Gift Guide for ideas on what to get your honey for V-Day, straight from the horse’s mouth (in this case the horse is more like a local “dude”).

For all the ladies who are sans-mate this Valentine’s Day, check out the site daily for affordable eats (we mentioned Restaurant week, right?), drinks (new Deals & Discounts), fashion (Battle of the Boutiques and sales galore), culture (Art Institute is free the entire month of February) and all the other fancy stuff you and your gal pals just can’t get enough of.

So, leave the scarves and mittens at home ladies cuz it’s gonna be a hot one!

Hot This Month: July, 2010

Give back while throwing down with the Stimulus Social Club's July 7 event at Stanley's Kitchen & Tap in the West Loop. A $10 donation gets you your first drink and apps, plus all the proceeds will go to House of the Good Shepherd.
July 13 is National French Fry day, but soggy fries in a red paper carton aren't on the menu for you, PLRG! Stop by deca BAR at The Ritz-Carlton, spring for a cocktail and you'll score complimentary hand-cut french fries. Choose from truffle/duck fat fries with smoked sea salt or regular fries with lemon salt, fresh oregano and grated parmesan reggiano.
If you're celebrating Bastille Day, July 14, what better way to pay homage to our French friends than with gourmet food and wine? In Fine Spirits is serving up a four-course garden dinner and wine pairing, prepared by Chef Marianne Sundquist, for just $50. Make sure to call and RSVP by July 10.
