Gen Art Introduces Chicago’s Best Emerging Designers

Fashion Focus Chicago is just around the corner, October 22-25, but are you up to date on your local fashion scene? No need to stress. We’ve already done your homework for you by choosing three of our favorite designers to watch who are showing at Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion event, October 24:

Comfy and Cute Day or Night: Imaginary People
Here are two girls who get how most of us live. We work hard, but play hard too and need clothing that feels as great on as it looks good. Telo Dunne and Olivia Shanks, admitted party girls, create flowy jersey dresses, vests, and tops that are modern, yet timeless and totally wearable.

Feminine Classics with a Hint of Edge: JLee Silver
We’re so glad Melanie Manego and Jenna Lee Fowler, founders of Fashion Heist, a clothing distribution company, decided to found their own label, JLee Silver. Their pieces are affordable, but that doesn’t mean they spare any detail. You’ll see clothing that is both functional and feminine, a perfect mix for a big meeting or drinks after work!

The Perfect Party Dress: Red Doll by Tatyana Merenyuk
Playful, pretty and party-ready is what comes to mind when we think of Red Doll by Tatyana Mernyuk. Her dresses, skirts and capes are the stuff little girls dreams are made of. Short hemlines and plunging v-necks lend some grown-up sexiness to all the ruffles and bows, making it the ultimate in party attire.

There will be five womenswear and menswear designers and three accessories designers in all at the Fresh Faces event. Get your ticket today and use code PLRG25 to get a 25% discount off the ticket price!

Shop ’til You Drop

If you still have holiday shopping to do, or if you even attempted to hit up the stores this past weekend, you know just how ridiculous it is to try to fight the crowds and trudge through the snow. You’d be much better off stopping by Beta Boutique this Thursday evening where you can get all your holiday shopping done in one place!

From 6:30pm to 9pm Beta Boutique will be a PLRG holiday paradise with lots of giftable items and of course their famous discounted designer clothing (they even have stuff for guys). For those of you who don’t know about Beta, here’s the scoop from their website:

Beta Boutique is the ultimate in-the-know fashion destination devoted to Chicago’s savviest shoppers. As Chicago’s first and only permanent sample sale, Beta Boutique boasts over 1700 square feet of fantastically designed floor space dedicated to the most select fashion-forward contemporary women’s samples and overstock from favorite local, domestic and international labels at incredible, jaw-dropping 40 - 90% off discounted prices.

In addition to their already fabulously discounted prices, PLRG shoppers will receive $10 off purchases of $50 or more and $20 off purchases of $100 or more the night of the event. Guests will also enjoy complimentary champagne, wine and other treats while listening to our favorite holiday tunes.

In exchange for all the holiday cheer we are asking for donations of scarves, gloves, board games or infant toys for the Metro Achievement Center for Girls (in lieu of an item, a $15 donation can be made). The Metro Achievement is a wonderful center to support and has great opportunities for PoorLittleRichGirls to volunteer their time and energy(click here for more info on volunteering). According to their website, the Metro Achievment Center is:

a supplementary education center which promotes the personal and educational development of Chicago’s inner-city girls from 4th through 12th grades, with the collaboration of parents, teachers and volunteers. Metro’s programs instill a sense of personal worth by developing students’ talents, character and spirit of service, and by strengthening academic and work habits. Metro prepares its students so they can complete their education and pursue a profession of their choice.

In true PLRG style we’ll also be holding a raffle that night for some really sweet prizes. We’ve got a Creed Gift package (a $315 value), a MOR Gift package (a $150 value), and a package including certificates good towards Celebrity Skin Couture Air Tan and Chic Gems, as well as a Chic Gems floating pearl necklace (package is a $125 value).

This is a private event, so space is limited. To make sure you and your friends get your spot, send an email to rsvp@poorlittlerichgirls.com.

Chic Spa Style

Chic Spa Style

One of our readers, Scarlett, brought up a great question this week in our very first Hey Sal column- what do you wear to a spa? And what do you pack to wear out of the spa? We admit, it can be a little intimidating, especially if you have never been for a “spa day” before.

First thing’s first, as Sally mentioned, when you are finally ready to slip on that spa robe the decision to go with or without undergarments is completely based on your level of comfort. No matter which way you go your technician will be using strategically placed towels during the treatment to cover your goodies, so there’s not need to worry about being completely exposed in front of a stranger.

What we sometimes find to be more confusing is what to wear into and out of the spa. You’ll want to feel comfortable, but stylish at the same time (you are, after all, headed out for a fancy celebrity-style spa day!). And you don’t want to lug around a bag as big as you are either. Something along the lines of yoga wear comes to mind. We like these digs, for their perfect balance of style, comfort, and affordable price:

Shawl Collar Cardigan, $15, Old Navy Russell Athletic Fleece Pants, $19.97, Sports Authority Outlet EDIE Carryall, $149 ($119 w/ 20% PLRG discount), Brynn Handbags

Now, you’re finished with your treatment and you feel like a million bucks. It is perfectly acceptable to wear the same thing out that you wore in (with the exception of a clean pair of skivvies maybe). But, what if you’re headed out? Maybe you’re going shopping or to lunch with your girls. You’ll want to pack as light as possible, but still need to have all the right pieces to look super-chic upon your exit. Jeans and boots can be bulky, so we recommend something lighter that you can roll up, but will easily become wrinkle free if you hang them up in your locker pre-treatment. We are big fans of the tights/dress combo for a lighter bag and a classic, yet comfy look:

Sweater Dress, $29.99 (was $68), Urban Outfitters Cotton Spandex Jersey Legging, $26, American Apparel

Hot This Month: July, 2010

Give back while throwing down with the Stimulus Social Club's July 7 event at Stanley's Kitchen & Tap in the West Loop. A $10 donation gets you your first drink and apps, plus all the proceeds will go to House of the Good Shepherd.
July 13 is National French Fry day, but soggy fries in a red paper carton aren't on the menu for you, PLRG! Stop by deca BAR at The Ritz-Carlton, spring for a cocktail and you'll score complimentary hand-cut french fries. Choose from truffle/duck fat fries with smoked sea salt or regular fries with lemon salt, fresh oregano and grated parmesan reggiano.
If you're celebrating Bastille Day, July 14, what better way to pay homage to our French friends than with gourmet food and wine? In Fine Spirits is serving up a four-course garden dinner and wine pairing, prepared by Chef Marianne Sundquist, for just $50. Make sure to call and RSVP by July 10.
