PLRG Preferred: PURE STYLE Girlfriends line of “Fashion Solutions”

Best Friends for your “Girls”

We've all been there- Some of the world's most beautiful, put-together women have had their BGW moment/s.

They’re called hooters, fun bags, ta-tas and cans, among other things. But to the woman that’s wearing them, breasts are part of who she is and what she can wear. It’s not uncommon that women who are “blessed” in the boob department wish they had less and those less endowed would do anything for more.

Either way- every woman wants the chest she has to look great no matter what she wears, even if it’s something backless, strapless, low-cut or sheer. Easier said than done, right? You could easily spend hundreds of dollars at big-name lingerie stores buying specialty bras that work for just one type of top. Don’t get us wrong - we are FIRM believers that spending money on quality bras is a must. Having your boobs in the right place with the right support can make you look thinner and will always make your clothes fit better. That being said, the array of specialty bras made just for halter tops, tube tops, t-shirts, etc. or just for one type of support (push-up, padded, etc.), each priced between $40-$58, can get overly pricy very quickly.

Other options? You could skip the sexy backless top you’ve been dying to wear, but that’s no fun. You could try and jerry-rig the bras (or boobs) you have to make an outfit work - i.e., tucking the straps in or use masking tape to secure the girls. Come on, we’ve all done it at least once before. Anything to avoid the nightmare-come-true scenario that every woman fears - Boobs Gone Wild, or BGW for short. Big or small, if your “girls” are out of control, people will notice. People will notice and tell other people. We are all about being noticed, but not for this reason.

Ok let’s get to it - this month PLRG was introduced to a line called PURE STYLE Girlfriends - an over-the-counter, inexpensive, hypo-allergenic and easy to use breast “accessory” line that we are now obsessed with.

We tested the following 4 products:

-Stay Put: Double-sided Fashion Tape (36 strips of clear disposable tape, $12)
Chances are, you’ve used some sort of double-sided tape before. This is pretty standard stuff, the “Mr. Fix-It” of the line that can be used for a number of things - here are just a few: stop bra straps from falling, close that “between-the-buttons” gap on your botton-down shirts, “hem” your jeans when you’re wearing flats instead of heels or keep revealing necklines in place.

-Pick-Me-Up: Breast Lift-Up Tape (Set of 3 disposable pairs, $17)
Basically, this tape is an instant boob job minus the price and the pain. The adhesive strips are waterproof (read: “sweat proof” for you dancing queens) so they actually stay in place all night. Better yet, the center part that actually covers your nipple doesn’t have any adhesive on it, so you don’t have to worry about a painful situation when taking them off.

-Smooth’em: Reusable Nipple Concealers (1 pair re-usable 20 times, $17)
Especially during winter in Chicago, it’s nice to know your “high beams” aren’t on just b/c of the chilly temps. These mini silicone discs are much easier to use than we expected, and they really do create a completely seamless silhouette. You can wash them with soap & water, which seemed to work just fine. Note: Unless you are working with a smaller cup size, wearing these concealers does NOT give you a free pass to go bra-less. Your nipples might be smoothed, but there is still potential for a case of BGW here.

-Gather The Girls: Adhesive Strapless Shaping Bra (1 re-usable pair; available in cup sizes A-D, $42)
If we had to skip any of the products this would probably be it. Not because it didn’t work well, but because you only can use it up to 10 times. But we’re not complaining - this “bra”, without any straps at all (clear adhesive wings stick to your skin beneath your armpits), really does wonders for cleavage. You even have a bit of control over just how much cleavage you want, since you put on each silicone cup separately, and then clasp the center hook together. The more work that clasp is doing, the more boobalicious you will be. Oh - we took the advice on the packaging and used a little bit of the fashion tape (see above) for extra security on the side flaps…and recommend you do the same.

All in all, we were fully impressed and think that every woman should have these accessories on hand…if not for herself, then for the “girls” in her life.

**You can find the line in stores around the city, including Akira, The Dressing Room, Handle With Care, Pump and Scoop**

West Elm Opens in Lincoln Park, Chicago PLRGs Swoon

West Elm Opens in Lincoln Park, Chicago PLRGs Swoon

Gray and yellow is such a modern, yet soft, color pairing. So hot right now.

The home-front (aka the area around Halsted and North in Lincoln Park*) just became a little more PLRG friendly with the opening of the city’s first West Elm store! Before now you had to hike up to the suburbs, or take your chances on an online purchase, but not anymore. This stylish, eco-conscious and wallet friendly retail furniture store should be a do-not-miss for all of you who love to decorate. Yesterday morning, we got a sneak peak tour of the new store and a chance to talk with West Elm execs.

Pinkish-purple and gray with black accents, mixed with fluffy pillows and mirrored pieces...our fave combo!

The color of the season that the design team at West Elm hope you embrace is yellow, and you will see it everywhere, from side tables, throw pillows and dinner wear. With all the grey (and white) weather we have been suffering through, not to mention the economy, it’s a nice change to embrace something so bright and energizing.

Keep your eyes peeled for a departure from their usual store layout/décor. There is definite attempt to mix materials and textures in their vignettes, as well as more installation art (think Anthropology). Currently, art from students at the Art Institute of Chicago hang throughout the store, which is a really great local addition.

So, the next time you are in desperate need for something new to spruce up your abode, or are just in the area, be sure to check out this new addition to Chicago’s design community!

*PLRG Fun Fact- the new West Elm is located in the old Whole Foods space, which is conveniently located very near the new Whole Foods space (dubbed “the clubhouse” by team PLRG for their readily available free parking & internet, made-to-order burritos and alcohol). Um, when the weather warms up, we might just start camping out at this intersection.

D&D Spotlight: Wolfbait & B-Girls Boutique

D&D Spotlight: Wolfbait & B-Girls Boutique

We like to think of co-owners Jenny & Shirley as the Ethan Hunts of local fashion. As if someone from a highly secretive branch of the CIA contacted them in 2006 and in a deep voice told them, “This is your mission if you choose to accept it: bring local Chicago designers to the masses”. As if they took their mission seriously and in response, opened Wolfbait & B-girls in Logan Square in April of that year. Well regardless if our love for secret agents or Tom Cruise (pre-Suri, obvi) have anything to do with this dream, the ladies behind Wolfbait can surely say “Mission Accomplished”.

Located at the roundabout at the intersection of Logan Boulevard, Milwaukee Avenue and Kedzie Boulevard, Wolfbait & B-girls feels like a home away from home, filled with unique designs from more than 50 local designers. They have everything from clothing to jewelry to handbags to greeting cards. After confirming Wolfbait as a participant in our upcoming fashion show, Battle of the Boutiques, we stopped by the boutique to check it out for ourselves. Inside we were greeted by Jenny, who was sitting at her sewing machine, working on a garment that will soon be for sale on the racks. Cool to say the least. Both owners have their own clothing lines (Bruiser & Brazen Judy) that they sell in the store. The merchandise is constantly changing, as most pieces are one-of-a-kind. The prices are right up our alley as well- ranging from $30-$250, with most under $100.

This week’s spotlight falls on Wolfbait, and their new D&D just for PoorLittleRichGirls.  Make it your mission and support Chicago’s amazing local designers.  (And come watch Wolfbait compete in Battle of the Boutiques on February 26th at Lumen!)

Feeling Ill About a Lost Earring? Call the Earring Doctor!

Lucky me! My husband gave me a beautiful pair of earrings for Christmas. I was so excited about them I wouldn’t take them off for days. As we boarded the plane to visit my family, the stewardess smiled at me and said, “Miss, it looks like you lost an earring!”

Has this happened to you before? I went home and found five additional lone earrings of which the partner had been somehow lost. I immediately scoured the internet for reinforcements and discovered EarringDoctor.com. Genius! You can order any type of extra earring backings to keep on hand and avoid any more casualties!

I only spent $5 on the clear stops I bought. It’s a PLRG must!

EXTRA PLRG TIP: If it’s too late for your favorite pair of earrings, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the lone ranger you have left. One way to use your solo earring is as a super-fancy push pin! You may need to use an actual pushpin (depending on whether you’re using a cork-board, fabric-board, etc.) to get things started, but in the end the look is tres chic!

When Trash Becomes Treasure: Millionaire Rejects

When Trash Becomes Treasure: Millionaire Rejects

"Shop" is tucked away on Armitage.

Every now and then I drive by a store with no visible sign or curb appeal and I can’t help it- I need to know what it is. Curiosity finally motivated me to stop into what I thought was a temporary warehouse sale, but turned out to be much more. Millionaire Rejects (soon to be called “Shop”) is tucked away on Armitage (at Sheffield, in the old Salon 1800 space). It is, get this, a consignment boutique for high-end decorative furniture and household items. I love this concept and it is beyond timely in this economic climate. Think about it- there are dozens of clothing consignment shops in Chicago but, woe is me, what can the wealthy do with their beautiful, pricey furniture when it’s once again time to remodel? Answer: sell it to me and all the other PoorLittleRichGirls!

Owner, Carol Brody, is a modern-day (ethical) Robin Hood of sorts. She consigns from the rich and sells to the poor for a great price. The store is stocked with marvelous buried treasures, large and small. Items range from decorative mirrors and blown glass to high-end signature armoires and one-of-a-kind signature pieces.

Shop ’til You Drop

If you still have holiday shopping to do, or if you even attempted to hit up the stores this past weekend, you know just how ridiculous it is to try to fight the crowds and trudge through the snow. You’d be much better off stopping by Beta Boutique this Thursday evening where you can get all your holiday shopping done in one place!

From 6:30pm to 9pm Beta Boutique will be a PLRG holiday paradise with lots of giftable items and of course their famous discounted designer clothing (they even have stuff for guys). For those of you who don’t know about Beta, here’s the scoop from their website:

Beta Boutique is the ultimate in-the-know fashion destination devoted to Chicago’s savviest shoppers. As Chicago’s first and only permanent sample sale, Beta Boutique boasts over 1700 square feet of fantastically designed floor space dedicated to the most select fashion-forward contemporary women’s samples and overstock from favorite local, domestic and international labels at incredible, jaw-dropping 40 - 90% off discounted prices.

In addition to their already fabulously discounted prices, PLRG shoppers will receive $10 off purchases of $50 or more and $20 off purchases of $100 or more the night of the event. Guests will also enjoy complimentary champagne, wine and other treats while listening to our favorite holiday tunes.

In exchange for all the holiday cheer we are asking for donations of scarves, gloves, board games or infant toys for the Metro Achievement Center for Girls (in lieu of an item, a $15 donation can be made). The Metro Achievement is a wonderful center to support and has great opportunities for PoorLittleRichGirls to volunteer their time and energy(click here for more info on volunteering). According to their website, the Metro Achievment Center is:

a supplementary education center which promotes the personal and educational development of Chicago’s inner-city girls from 4th through 12th grades, with the collaboration of parents, teachers and volunteers. Metro’s programs instill a sense of personal worth by developing students’ talents, character and spirit of service, and by strengthening academic and work habits. Metro prepares its students so they can complete their education and pursue a profession of their choice.

In true PLRG style we’ll also be holding a raffle that night for some really sweet prizes. We’ve got a Creed Gift package (a $315 value), a MOR Gift package (a $150 value), and a package including certificates good towards Celebrity Skin Couture Air Tan and Chic Gems, as well as a Chic Gems floating pearl necklace (package is a $125 value).

This is a private event, so space is limited. To make sure you and your friends get your spot, send an email to rsvp@poorlittlerichgirls.com.
