Hey PLRG Readers! We’d like to formally introduct you to Katie, one of our favorite Yelp! reviewers, and hopefully will soon be one of yours as well! Keep an eye out for her future reviews of getting wined and dined by Chicago’s finest (and not-so-fine) establishments.

Review of Green Grocer, 1402 W. Grand Ave, Chicago, IL 60622

Grocery shopping in the big city is often as much fun as a long day at the DMV or say… accidentally setting your pubes on fire. I don’t know how the latter would ever “accidentally” happen but if it could you know it would suck.

Making fun of grocery stores is about as easy as saying Courtney Love is a terrible mother. It’s not really necessary, but I find it entertaining and I like to do so.

Sub Par Grocery Stores

  1. Aldo: Try coming here and not feeling like you’re slumming it. If you don’t feel like that, well… god I dunno… socioeconomics can uh…be a bitch…? Sorry about your crushing poverty? Please take comfort in knowing I have my own special corner reserved in Hell for writing this and God will probably smile on you in the long run.
  2. Strack and Van Til: I consider this a store for people who like to shop at Kohl’s, get their hair cut at BoRics and use the term “good deal” way too much. There’s a large positive correlation of these people who bitch about the city being very expensive and yet drive large vehicles.
  3. Jewel: The Queen Mother of all suckitude. I can’t even begin. The set up of this store is the most anti feng shui you’ve ever seen. Every person who works in this store hates you and your ass face.

OK, I’ll be honest, I don’t have a lot of money to burn myself but I’ve gotten to the point where I’m willing to spend a little more on groceries in order to have a wonderful shopping experience and really good quality stuff.

Yes. I did just say “wonderful shopping experience.” I actually look forward to coming to Green Grocer. Everyone who I’ve met that works here (Cassie & Kim) has taken the time to not only say hello but ask me my name and make awesome suggestions about cool products I should try. They’ve even given me coupons for half off bottles of wine! And this ain’t no Franzia either! (Sorry, Franzia enthusiasts.)

Have you ever had garlic beet dip before? I assure you, it’s phenomenal. I’m not even a beet fan and Kim had me try a little bit and it was freakin’ great. They’ve always got multiple free samples out. Even better, every Tuesday night they have “Tasting Tuesday” from 5-7pm.

I simply cannot hype this place enough. I’ve loved everything I’ve ever eaten from here. So many of their products are local too. It’s fun to find out about all the good folks who are cranking out tasty, honest food right in our city.

If you crave the robotic anonymity of those self-checkout machines that get confounded if you try to scan more than one item in 30 seconds - then yeah, stick to Jewel. Enjoy whiling away a solid 5 minutes until some loafy employee finally saunters over with the “liquor key” and stares blankly at your ID.

I’ll stick to Green Grocer.

Detoxification: So Hot Right Now

Detoxify.  Cleanse.  Purify.  Restore.

These trendy words are all over the fitness and wellness industry, and never more so than when people are primed to get their New Year’s resolutions in order in less than a week.

So what on Earth do they all mean?  Why are some of the products ridiculously expensive?  And why should you want to “detox” anyway?  How can a girl on a budget who of course craves the clear skin, radiant eyes, and flat abs cleansing promises do it cheaply but safely?

I’m here to help.  Let me preface by saying that you should ALWAYS be in good health confirmed by a medical doctor before beginning any sort of cleanse.  This is especially important if you have any pre-existing conditions or if you are on any medications as some natural herbs in cleansing products can interact with medical drugs.  So get checked first!

Now, as the holiday drinks and cookies begin to pile on, a New Year’s cleanse can sound very appealing.  Think long and hard about how far you want to go.  You always want to set a goal that is reasonable for you, your occupation, and your prior experience with detoxifying routines.  Any goal, even if its just to give up your beloved diet soda (yes, personal experience with that one… sigh…) or if it’s to go whole-hog vegan (pardon the irony), is a great goal.  Do it for you and no one else.

For the budget diva, at-home kits versus spa treatments are the way to go (but be on the look for New Year’s specials in the Red Eye and such… spas have really suffered in the recession and prices are LOW!). Peruse your local Whole Foods (or try Life Spring on Clark & Belmont, a great family-owned place with good prices) and compare prices and ingredients if you are looking to do an actual cleanse.  Many of these kits are glorified laxatives, so be aware of that, and many have the same exact ingredients but range in price.  You could be better off just filling your fridge with fresh produce, Kombucha, and buying some organic teas on your own.  Another but pricier option could be enlisting the help of a place like Karyn’s Inner Beauty Center in Lincoln Park, a sort of go-between where you do thing on your own but with support.

I’m a true believer of Yoga as a great detoxifier.  Its twisting & compressing poses give all of your systems a good squeeze to keep things moving, literally.  This is ESPECIALLY important for your lymphatic (read: immune) system which has no pump and relies on body movement to keep things going & draining.  I’m running my 2nd annual Detoxification Yoga series at Infuse Yoga Spa this year beginning Sunday, January 3rd, from 10am -12 noon for 6 weeks.  Last year an amazing group of women signed up and this year the series is already almost full with returning clients and customers who heard of the amazing comraderie and results.  Think of it like Detox for Dummies… each week is a themed topic (i.e. Nutrition) and a complimenting Yoga practice with discussion, fruit, teas and handouts after.

Whatever way you go, cleaning your system by treating your body right is always a great thing to do after the holidays.  Your skin, eyes, energy levels, and mood will thank you for it.

Now that’s hot.

Yours in Fitness,

Christy

As the new Get Hot columnist, let me tell you that I firsthand understand how expensive keeping fit, kicking butt, and getting zen with Yoga or Pilates can be. I’ve been teaching Yoga for over 2 years now at big-name gyms, corporate private classes, and at Yoga studios…and you’re right, it’s expensive (and no, teachers don’t see that cash)! My love affair with fitness combined with my lifestyle as a PoorLittleRichGirl have led me here and I hope that my column can help you have the best of both worlds.

Advice From a Jerrk: My Date Wore Heely’s!

I am fascinated by the way men and women relate, and if that doesn’t make me an expert, it may make me a kind of student teacher. Hopefully this column will help share a little of what I’ve learned, and maybe shed some light on the way men think, from one man’s perspective. - JM

Dear Jerrk,

I have a huge problem. I am only attracted to jerks, and I figured with a name like Jerrk you know a lot about them. All of my relationships are filled with drama and mistrust. For example, my current boyfriend constantly breaks into my email and looks at my texts. If he finds anything he doesn’t like he calls me names and starts a fight. My last boyfriend keyed my car after an argument. For some reason, I have never had a stable romantic relationship, despite the fact that my parents have been married for 30 years and are still madly in love!! What am I doing wrong?!

-Addicted to Drama, 27

The relationship that needs the most work right now is the relationship you have with yourself.  If you’re not in therapy, start immediately. You’re parents being happily married for 30 years is great, but it doesn’t give you a free pass to a good relationship.

I went out with this guy I’ve sort of been seeing last night and he was wearing a pair of Heely’s… (I’m NOT kidding… if you don’t know what they are: http://www.zappos.com/heelys). This is definitely not okay for a grown man, correct? He was also wearing a suit if that helps you with the visual any more…He otherwise is great - successful, ambitious, really fun to be around…what should I do? It was a total turn-off for me.

-What’s the Heely-O?

I went back and forth on this one. Most people I talked to called it a deal breaker, but I kind of like his confidence if that is in fact what we’re dealing with. I figure there’s going to be something you dislike about anyone you date; at least with this guy it’s something funny. I think the sensible thing to do is play this one with baseball rules, three strikes and he’s out. It’s up to you to decide how many strikes he gets for his Heely’s.

I met a guy from an online dating website. I have been honest from the beginning that I am looking for a relationship. We have been dating for almost two months and the holidays are rapidly approaching. We have established that we are only dating each other, but he hasn’t mentioned anything about New Years plans. Should I assume that we are doing something? I don’t want to come off needy, but also don’t want to spend New Year’s alone!

-New Year’s Ball Dropped

Assuming you’re going to be together on New Year’s without having made plans will only leave you disappointed. I don’t think there’s anything needy about asking him what his plans are, just be prepared that they might not include you.

This is the fourth official installment of Jerrod Melman’s column, “Advice from a Jerrk.” If you have relationship or guy-related questions for Jerrod, just send an email to AskJerrod@PoorlittleRichGirls.com. When he’s not working on his advice column, Jerrod is a managing partner of Hub 51, River North’s hottest dining, nightlife and social establishment created by him and his brother, R.J.

YELP READERS LOVE SOFIA VINTAGE
The owner of the store was super friendly, and while she offered to help me pull some items based on my likes and dislikes, she was in no way one of those hovering sales people trying to shove merchandise down my throat. From the looks of the showroom I thought that all the merchandise would be outside of my budget, but was thrilled when I was able to leave the store with an entire outfit for under $100.” (read more on Yelp)

Celebrity Holidays with Showbiz Shelly

Hey everyone! Welcome to my Holiday column! B96-FM just held its annual Jingle Bash featuring Livvi Franc, Sean Kingston, Justin Bieber, Jay Sean, David Guetta, Pitbull and more. I had the chance to interview them backstage and here’s what they had to say about the holidays.

“Down” singer Jay Sean on celebrating Christmas:
“I love Christmas. Christmas is one of the few times in the year where I actually get a chance to go and be with my family and friends. There’s nothing like that. There’s nothing like switching off for a couple of days, forgetting about everything and just being a regular dude and stuffing your face, having drinks with your family and catching up. It’s amazing.”

On getting drunk at Christmas parties:
“I do get wasted. I enjoy myself, but when I’m working…I don’t drink when I’m working. I can’t drink before a show or anything like that so I don’t get much of a chance to have an unwind. So when I do, you know I go in hard.”

On rapping while drunk:
“I came from hip hop and when I get drunk I seem to think I’m Eminem or something. And you cannot tell me anything else. In my head I’m the best rapper alive when wasted.”

Sean Kingston on what he wants for Christmas:
“To be honest with you, I got everything that I could ever wish for so for Christmas I would just want to rest up and spend time with the family.

Chicago’s own Jeremih has had huge hits this year including “Imma Star” and “Birthday Sex.” Here’s what he wants for Christmas:
“To be home. To be with my family and my friends and loved ones which I think I’ll get as a gift this year. I want to get a condo downtown for myself. I have an apartment now, but I would love to move right off the lake somewhere. ”

And would he like any “Birthday Sex” this season?
“Christmas sex this season. That’s right.”

Pitbull on Chicago women and winter clothing:
“There definitely are some very beautiful women in Chicago in every way, shape and form. And sometimes it can be disappointing when you take off all the winter clothes and you go ‘Jesus, that’s not what I was expecting.’ And some are like, ‘Dayum boy! That thing is serious!’

  • Pitbull will be back in town New Year’s Eve for the official Playboy Celebration at the Hilton Chicago (720 S. Michigan Ave). That’s happening 9 pm-2am.

Cellar Rat Holiday Pick: The Perfect Wine Gift on the Cheap!

Wine makes a great gift no matter what the budget. A no brainer gift that, I doubt, gets “regifted” much. But, let’s face it… we all have people on our holiday gift lists that don’t warrant or might not appreciate an expensive bottle. The dilemma? How to choose a tasty bottle without giving away the fact that you didn’t spend much.

Here are a few tips-

First off, shop at your local, dedicated wine shop. Most shops run by wine geeks like myself aren’t interested in carrying the same big production wines that you’ll find at grocery stores and every chain liquor shop. So, you can make wine selections that the recipient won’t see on sale for $5.99 at Jewel or Binny’s! Also, odds are you’ll get a much better wine when you ask for a recommendation at a shop where they know and care about the selection, rather than the robots working for chain stores or the random pick at the grocer.

Second, think about the personality of the person receiving the gift. If they’re into wine, or just adventurous in general, you can find great values in wine made from grapes and regions that most people don’t know. Ask your wine seller about great values from southern France, southern Italy and Spain. If you think the recipient is more conservative or a complete wine novice, it’s probably better to stick with varietally labeled wines made from popular grape types. The most requested reds are Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Malbec. Thanks to the movie “Sideways”, many people insist they don’t like Merlot, so that might not be the best choice. In whites, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio are the most requested. I get a lot of negative comments about Chardonnay. People have tired of the oaky styles, so that might be one to avoid as well.

Here are a couple suggestions currently offered by Cellar Rat:

Naiara Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) $11.99

A tasty, dark, rich Malbec with very elegant looking packaging. Malbec is immensely popular at the moment and this bottle should please just about any red wine fan. This could easily pass for a $20 bottle in both taste and looks.

Bliss Sauvignon Blanc (Mendocino, California) $11.99

First planted in 1947, the current generation of the Bliss family is making terrific wine using sustainable farming practices. Classic, citrusy, fresh Sauvignon Blanc at a great price. They make a nice Cabernet Sauvignon at the same price.

There are many other examples, proving that you can feel good about giving quality, interesting wines from small producers without breaking the bank.

Cheers and Happy Holidays!

The Truth About Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Here at PLRG, we constantly receive emails about new products, restaurants and services targeted at women just like us. It’s not often, however, that something really makes us stop and want to learn more and in this case - scares us. A few weeks ago, we read an article about how thousands of women across the country are mistaking their acne and/or excessive hair growth for mere beauty “fixer-uppers” when they are actually external symptoms of PCOS - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. By turning to beauty treatments, these women are actually hiding the warning signs and covering up what could be a serious health condition that if left untreated could lead to infertility and even cancer. We needed to know more so we reached out to fellow PLRG (and kick-ass OB-GYN), Dr. Jessica Groden. Dr. “G” as we like to call her filled us in on PCOS and what we all should know about it. We are thrilled to have Dr. G as a new regular contributor to PLRG.com, bringing us information and advice every month on various women’s health issues and information. Here’s to your health!

"Why are the young, hot doctors standing behind me!?"

Polycystic Whaat?!

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, also known as Stein-Leventhal syndrome, or more commonly, PCOS, is a disorder that affects the reproductive (ie: babymaker) and metabolic systems of the body. It’s hard to estimate it’s prevalence given the debate among the criteria necessary for diagnosis of this disease; some estimate approximately 7% of reproductive aged women are affected by PCOS.  In recent years, different organizations like the National Institute of Health and the Androgen Excess Society have created varying diagnostic criteria, but they all share key features of the disease.

Editors Note: Ok, we’re about to throw some smart shit your way (like harvard smart) so if you’re still working off last night’s hangover, we suggest you consider bookmarking this one.

Hyperandrogenism, or elevated levels of androgens in the blood, is the first of these features.  Androgens are hormones naturally found in both men and women, but in significantly higher concentrations in our male counterparts- and possibly some female body builders, but don’t quote us on that.  Testosterone is the most well known of the androgens, and is the hormone to which we owe Brad Pitt’s deep manly voice, Tom Selleck’s  thick chest hair, and the big muscles that we wish our boyfriends had.  However, abnormal hormone regulation in PCOS causes elevated androgen levels, which in turn has some unpleasant consequences such as acne, oily skin, and abnormal hair growth in places like the chin or chest.  Some may even have an enlarged clitoris or a deep voice. Is that good enough of a visual for you?

A second key feature of this disorder is abnormal periods.  Women with PCOS may have a total absence of periods, or very irregular cycles.  We can also blame this on the abnormal hormone regulation, which is due to anovulatory cycles, or menstrual cycles where no egg is released from the ovary.  As you may have guessed, when there is no egg released each month, getting pregnant can be difficult.  In fact, many women are first diagnosed with this condition when they try to become pregnant and are unsuccessful.

Despite its name, the presence of polycystic ovaries is not required for diagnosis of PCOS.  Polycystic ovaries are ovaries that have multiple cysts on them. Yes, we know how scary that sounds, but cysts are actually an extremely common and often incidental finding on pelvic ultrasound or other imaging study.  In combination with the above mentioned symptoms, polycystic ovaries may aid in the diagnosis, but not all women who have ovarian cysts have PCOS, and not all women with PCOS have ovarian cysts.  Other features are often found in women with PCOS, obesity being one of the most common.  PCOS patients may also have elevated blood pressure and early signs of diabetes mellitus like insulin resistance.  Women who are diagnosed with PCOS will always be screened for these conditions.

So what’s the big deal? A little chin hair never hurt anyone.

PCOS is a risk factor for some more serious diseases than acne and unsightly hair.  PCOS carries with it an increased risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, as well as other worrisome complications such as endometrial hyperplasia (sometimes a precursor for cancer) and endometrial cancer.  We can blame this on the chronic exposure of the endometrial lining of the uterus to estrogen, which is normally suppressed during half of our menstrual cycle after ovulation.  Luckily, simply losing weight can reduce the risk of these complications substantially!  Weight loss in PCOS patients is associated with resumption of normal menses, increase in spontaneous pregnancy rates, and improvements in insulin resistance and cholesterol, not to mention your jeans will thank you. These benefits of weight loss aren’t limited to PCOS patients.  If you’re overweight, go for a walk, join a gym, get a workout buddy…whatever it takes to be as healthy as you can!

I have acne…Do I have PCOS?

An occasional zit is normal. Stubborn, bad acne that won't go away no matter what you do? That's something to talk to your doc about.

Just like not everyone who carries a Prada bag has a big bank account, not everyone who has irregular periods or acne has PCOS.  Sometimes acne is just acne and irregular periods are just irregular periods.  There is a broad differential diagnosis for the various combinations of symptoms of PCOS, from thyroid disease to primary ovarian failure.  If you are worried about any combination of symptoms, make an appointment to see your gynecologist or primary care doctor to get things checked out.  If you’re trying to get pregnant without any success, it’s important to keep in mind that true infertility is not diagnosed until it has been unsuccessful for a full year.  Trying for 2 months without success is NOT something to worry about.  That being said, it’s always a good idea to see your doctor before trying to become pregnant so you can get your prescriptions for prenatal vitamins and find out all the food (and drinks) to avoid.  No matter where you’re at in your reproductive life- trying to get pregnant, trying everything you can to not get pregnant, trying to lose weight or get rid of that stubborn acne- establishing yourself with a doctor you trust and respect while you’re young and healthy is important!  So talk to your friends, ask for referrals, do some research and think about a new year’s resolution to stay healthy.

Happy holidays!

Dr. G was born and raised in Boston. She graduated from Tufts University and went on to the Tufts University School of Medicine. After graduating from medical school, she began her training as a resident physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology at one of the largest medical centers in the midwest. Party Dress & Winter Sale at Handle With Care

I was in my old hood, Lincoln Park/Old Town, last night for a Battle of the Boutiques planning meeting (BTW- this year’s Battle is going to be super hot, you should really be getting excited!) and I happened to park right in front of Handle with Care.

To my surprise, the posh boutique is having a couple of really great sales and I just had to share them with you. Just in time for holiday parties and winter weather they’re offering*:

  • 20% off Selected Party Dresses
  • 30% off Selected Winter Coats
  • Take an extra 25% off all Winter Merchandise
I also popped over to their website and was happy to see an array of budget-friendly items from picture frames to graphic tees. It seems that new-ish owner, Briston Coxe, is really doing right by this Old Town mainstay and chi-town PLRGs!

Daily Candy Says “Give a Pig for Xmas,” Everyone Freaks Out

According to people's comments on DC, gifting one of these is akin to abandoning an animal all together?

Once again, the ever entertaining Lindsey Duda has stumbled upon something that makes us smile and, in this case especially, also scratch our heads. It seems that Daily Candy has started quite the controversy over their suggestion to give a Royal Dandie miniature pig as a gift this holiday season. Apparently that pissed off a few people who think that alive, miniature anything is not an appropriate gift for the holidays and they commented- ALOT!

No, this is not an excerpt from The Onion. This is real, click here to see their Gift Guide and ensuing comments.

Then, tell us what you think below. Is this that upsetting to you? Are you outraged? Do you care? Tell us about it!
